If you apply next year, they will say you can’t leave even if you get accepted because when the consulate sees the other visa that wasn’t validated and you come to ask for another visa, let’s be serious, my brother, my sister. People are looking from west to east for something, and you are casually staying. No matter the situation, you must go and continue your studies even if you have to borrow money. That’s what I advise you. But I don’t advise you to stay here in Africa. With a very good opportunity to study at prestigious French universities, you don’t realise it’s a privilege.

I’m not really sure. But if you are truly unable to go, I think it’s wise to write to the French embassy that issued your visa to see if the visa can be cancelled or not. Or if you need to do something specific.
But you shouldn’t just hold onto it, because your visa is supposed to be validated once you arrive on French territory.
Depending on the constraints you have, another solution would be to come to France before returning.
You can then request to attend your courses remotely if this possibility exists, of course.
You will have already validated your visa, and this option prevents you from having to apply for another visa next year. You would come directly to France with your old visa and then apply for a student residence permit as if you had been in France the whole time.
