Studying in France: Student Support!

Support is one of the ways for foreign students to demonstrate their financial means of subsistence during their studies in France. The aim of this article is to present different types of support, the eligibility conditions, the financial and legal commitment, and finally a model statement you can download now.

And what are the eligibility conditions?

Anyone can provide you with support as long as they have sufficient financial resources. Ideally, a permanent contract is required, unless your guarantor has enough liquidity in their account. In this case, a bank statement should suffice.

In all cases, the amount of NET monthly resources the guarantor must have is calculated as follows:

For the guarantor on net minimum wage 2026 €1460
For the student €877.50
Per dependent family member of the guarantor (*) and per family member of the student accompanying them €150.00

For example, if your guarantor is a single man, theoretically, he must justify net monthly resources of at least €2,338 net/month (approximately €2,746 gross per month) to be eligible to provide you with support.

E Note: With the decree of 22 June 2026, from 1 August 2026, « the foreigner must demonstrate having monthly subsistence means corresponding to at least 47% of the gross monthly minimum wage in force on the date of filing their application for full-time employment. Â» It is possible that some prefectures, embassies, and consulates will start requiring €877.50 per month instead of €615 even before this decree takes effect.

Types of support for foreign students

In general, there are two types of support:

1 – Total support (financial support and accommodation)

2 – Financial support (just funding).

1 – Total support

If the person who is to support you lives in the same city as your school or university, then you can live with them during your studies. In this case, they can provide you with total support: they finance your studies and accommodate you.

Your guarantor must write you a support statement (model below) where they confirm that they will provide you with financial support and accommodation during your studies.

2 – Financial support

If your guarantor lives far from your place of study, or if for some reason they cannot accommodate you, they can simply provide you with financial support.

In this case, your guarantor must write you a support statement (model below), where they confirm that they will provide you with financial support during your studies.

Required documents

In all cases (financial or total support), your guarantor must legalise the support statement at the nearest town hall to their place of residence. They must also attach the following documents to the file:

  • A copy of their identity document (French or European ID card, residence permit).
  • The last three salary slips or equivalent for self-employed and liberal professions.
  • The last three bank statements (account extracts).
  • The latest tax notice.
  • Proof of residence (EDF or GDF bill less than 3 months old or home insurance contract).
  • Their employment contract (permanent) if applicable.

A document that commits you financially and legally

Article 441-7 of the penal code provides for a penalty of one year’s imprisonment and a €15,000 fine for making a declaration or certificate stating materially inaccurate facts, falsifying an originally sincere declaration or certificate, or using an inaccurate or falsified declaration or certificate.

Model support statement for a foreign student

First of all, it should be noted that in most prefectures (and/or town halls), there are specific forms. Ask your guarantor to go to the nearest town hall or prefecture to collect a statement to fill out. If necessary, you can use our model below.

Salut @traorecolon

Salut @traorecolon,

Tu as eu l’admission dans quelles villes?
