At just 16 years old, Théo Curin joined the French delegation at the Paralympic Games, marking the start of a series of extraordinary achievements. From World Vice-Champion in swimming to the first quad-amputee athlete to complete a half Ironman, Théo continues to push the boundaries. His journey is an inspiration to all, particularly to those who aspire to overcome their own challenges and embrace their differences.
Born in 2000 in Lunéville, Theo Curin had to have all four limbs amputated at the age of six due to a severe meningitis. He joined the French parasport swimming team at 13 and quickly became a French hopeful in the discipline.
At 16, he was already the youngest member of the French delegation at the Paralympic Games. In 2017, he became double World Vice-Champion, then won a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle at the World Championships in London in 2019.
In 2020, he achieved the unthinkable by becoming the first quad-amputee athlete to complete a half Ironman in Les Sables d’Olonne.
The following year, he took on an even greater challenge: the Titicaca Challenge, crossing the 108 km of the eponymous lake entirely unaided.
In 2022, he made history once again by being the first parasport athlete to complete the 57 km Santa Fe-Coronda aquatic marathon in Argentina.
In 2024, he embarked on the Madiba Challenge, in tribute to Nelson Mandela, swimming 30 km in relay around Robben Island, the island where Mandela was imprisoned for nearly twenty-seven years. The next day, after cycling 100 km around Cape Town, Théo Curin and Ismaël Khelifa inaugurated a sports and cultural space for children in the disadvantaged neighbourhood of Langa.
Alongside his sporting achievements, Théo is also a speaker, model, actor, and TV presenter.
His message is simple and powerful: « I succeeded, and you can too. We all have differences, whether physical or mental. It is these differences that make us strong. Find the positive aspects in your uniqueness, and move forward with confidence. »
For those aspiring to study in France or already there, Théo Curin’s story is an inspiration. Despite the challenges, he has shown that anything is possible with determination, courage, and a willingness to push the limits. So, no matter where you are today, know that your difference is your greatest asset. Believe in yourself, dare to dream big, and never give up.
