Surviving the university jungle: a guide

University is sold as the best time of our lives. Hmm. Between lectures that feel like collective hypnosis sessions, the quest for a decent flat, and seminars where you wonder what you’re doing there, it sometimes feels like being dropped into a hostile jungle. By the way, l’Etudiant recently published an article on student loneliness. But don’t panic! This survival guide is here to help you tame the beast.

Phase 1: The Shock (aka « What is this thing? »)

First day at uni. Were you expecting a « Gossip Girl » vibe? Forget it. Prepare for crowded lectures, lecturers speaking an unknown language (aka « academic jargon »), and administrative tasks that make you want to quit. Breathe. It’s normal. We’ve all been there.

Phase 2: The Quest for the Holy Grail

No matter your budget, finding student accommodation is a miracle. Prepare for flat viewings that feel more like the quest for the Holy Grail. Exorbitant rent? Welcome to the wonderful world of student real estate. Take heart, one day you might find a place to lay your bags (and your hopes).

Phase 3: Integration (aka « How to make friends without selling a kidney »)

University is a chance to meet people. Join clubs, societies, attend student parties (even if you’re not in the mood). Basically, get out of your room! Don’t be afraid to approach people, even if you’re shy. A simple « Hi, are you in the same class as me? » can work wonders. And if you really can’t integrate, there’s always the option of « talking to houseplants ». They’re always listening (and won’t judge you for your questionable pyjamas).

Phase 4: Academic Survival (aka « How not to end up with a mushy brain »)

Lectures are a challenge. Between the lecturer speaking at 100 miles an hour and unreadable slides, it’s easy to zone out. The trick? Find a nice classmate who takes notes (and is willing to share them). And don’t hesitate to ask questions, even if you feel like you’re the only one who doesn’t get it.

In summary: Student life is a jungle. There will be moments of doubt, loneliness, and intense procrastination. But it’s also an incredible time, full of encounters, discoveries, and freedom. The important thing is to stay positive, adapt, and not hesitate to ask for help. And above all, don’t forget: you are not alone! We’re all in the same boat (or rather, in the same jungle).
